Low magnesium

I did a few test with my new Elos Magnesium kit and it looks like I'm running a little low. Assuming I did the test right, and it's pretty hard not to since Elos' test kits are very easy to use, I'm currently at 1100 ppm. So off I went to the supply closet to dose some magnesium. Its going to take awhile to raise it to where it should be ( 1300 -1350 ).

Perhaps the low Magnesium is the reason I've haven't been seeing some of the corals growing as well as they had in the past. I say this because from what I heard at the last club meeting, the only usable calcium is the calcium thats in a 3:1 ratio with magnesium. So at 1100, I only had about 350 ppm of usable calcium even tho normally my levels are about 400 to 425.

Time will tell.

What a slacker

Ok, been way to long since I've written a post. I had been waiting for some pictures from my cousin who came by so that I could attach a picture to each post, but it appears the pictures aren't coming.

So a few changes recently.

About two weeks ago I got a sample of Tropic Marin salt and I've been using that for water changes lately. I have to say the corals seem to be responding well to it. I like the coloration I'm seeing and the growth is good to. Tropic Marin claims to have all the of the trace elements found in the ocean in their salt and calcium products. Neither of my previous to salts make that claim. Two weeks is barely enough time to really say it's made a difference, but it looks promising.

I seem to have finally beaten my algae problem. After months of straining my frozen food before feeding, I've noticed a rapid decrease in the amount of algae in the tank. So drastic in fact that I can almost claim to have no more algae!

Tonight I started using some new supplements. I just added some of Elos' Omega amino acid supplement and in about an hour I'm going to add some of the Skimmer Plus coral food. In the talk that Mike Paletta gave my club awhile back, he recommeded the amino acid supplement outright and said that the coral food supplement was good if you're not willing to make your own 'papone' ( Italian for milk ). The recipe is pretty nasty so I think I'll stick to the commercial stuff for now.
